Techniques for breeding a substitution host: Philosamia ricini

Abstract

In the framework of several biological control programs against different lepidoptera and heteroptera pests using egg parasites, the Biocontrol Laboratory of the UEVT INRAE PACA started rearing Philosamia ricini, the Eri silkworm. The production of this lepidoptera, considered as an ideal substitute host according to several criteria, ensures the daily production of large eggs, essential for rearing several oophagous parasitoids present in the laboratory (genera Trichogramma, Ooencyrtus, and Anastatus) throughout the year. Moreover, this rearing allows studying the biology and behavior of egg parasites, in order to set up a biocontrol program against the eggs of insect pests. Rearing Philosamia ricini is currently done in several steps, following the natural biological cycle of the moth: egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, moth. Production has been operational since 2013 and is undergoing constant optimization.
