P3R rethinks goats’ environmental enrichments

Abstract

At INRAE’s experimental facility Small Ruminant Phenotyping (P3R) in Bourges, the year 2022 was marked by the strong involvement of the teams in enhancing the goats’ environment. New enrichment systems were installed, others were entirely created using recycled materials found on-site, and a cooperative enrichment system was fully conceived and designed by some P3R employees. In a constant effort to improve the welfare of animals housed indoors, the designed systems aim to enrich their behavioral repertoire and, in particular, to allow them to express natural behaviors. For this reason, these systems must be tailored according to the specific needs of the species.
