Assessing the welfare of animals used for scientific purpose: an improvement approach that goes beyond the 3R
Abstract
Before being used in an experimental protocol, animals are raised for a varying length of time. In order to ensure that breeding practices meet the animals’ needs, it is essential to be able to assess their welfare throughout their stay in our facilities. As an introduction to this chapter 2, this article summarizes the key principles governing the assessment of animal welfare and outlines the indicators required for a multi-criteria approach.
