PIGLOW, an application for assessing animal welfare in pig farming

Abstract

As part of the European PPILOW project (2019-2024, https://www.ppilow.eu/), the PIGLOW application, which has been developed for mobile phones, has been set up. It is used to carry out animal welfare assessments (AWAs) on farms for pregnant females, suckling females and their piglets, post-weaning piglets and growing pigs. The evaluation is based on around 60 criteria. A summary is generated automatically and the main results are displayed graphically, including a ‘welfare radar’.
