The mobility plan: a tool to sustainably rethink travel and open new avenues

Abstract

Strong emitters of greenhouse gases, professional and home-to-work commutes are one of the targets of the ecological transition. Being able to identify, quantify, and question them seems essential to find the levers to reduce their emissions. Initially intended for the private sector, mobility plans are one of the tools to manage the decarbonization of journeys within INRAE. This systemic tool for addressing mobility issues goes beyond a purely technical approach (such as electrifying the vehicle fleet, providing bicycle parking facilities, etc.) to support the development of more sustainable modes of transportation—for example, cycling instead of driving, or carpooling instead of driving alone. In this article, the Nouvelle-Aquitaine–Poitiers and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur centers share their experience, illustrating the tool’s value in initiating new practices and fostering new interactions.
